Life as a military spouse is ALWAYS an adventure, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, and even on occasion fabulous.

I have been married to my Marine for over 8 years and during that time, we have had 4 overseas moves. We have never actually had a stateside to stateside PCS, which I have heard is a whole other ball game in the PCS world. Out of those 4 moves, my husband has been gone (on deployment, training, or just at work) for 90% of those moving days (aka. pick-up or drop-off stuff days).

Moving to another country is incredibly overwhelming:

  • you don’t speak the language,
  • you can’t read what any of the buildings say,
  • you have to RE-learn how to drive on the wrong side of the road,
  • left alone to deal with off-base housing and move-in because your husband has to go on a 2 month trip.

Yet it’s in those most chaotic moments that the Lord seems to shine brightest.

We arrived in Okinawa late at night, and the very next day we had a newcomers brief, at 6 am. We were exhausted but luckily there was coffee. The information was so new, that we just soaked it up! During that brief, we were able to walk around to several different tables or booths set up by different organizations around the island. At one of those booths, I saw information about a Bible study on base. I knew I had to join, because I needed to be proactive when it came to making new friends. Well, little did I know that the gal who happened to be working the table that day, would later become one of my very best friends to this day…. God knew!

I went to the PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) with my sponsor spouse, and on my very first visit won a prize. Then I was invited to lunch, and got to meet some incredible women… all different ages, all different backgrounds, all different branches of service, and all different ranks. I didn’t realize then, because I was so new to the military life, but this is a rare and special group.

We also started going to the same church as our sponsors, and as soon as folks heard that I was a new military spouse, new to the island, and that my hubby was away, people began to lavish me with kindness and gifts. Some would stop by with a meal, and just to visit my new place. Others would invite me over, or out to dinner, and my new welcome brief friend, volunteered me to help with a new retreat happening, and would pick me up, and drive me all over the island with her.

Getting to talk to family back home was expensive, or a bit complicated, and nights were incredibly lonely in our 3 bedroom apartment… Yet I knew that I was not alone. I knew God was loving on me through his servants, and through my willingness to accept help. I felt like I had a family away from family… and the Lord just continued to remind me… “I love you. I’ve got you. Trust me.”

I was already a believer in Jesus Christ, and I knew in my head that he would take care of me, through this new journey… but I think my heart wasn’t so sure, if he would come through. Well he did, and to this day, my first duty station has been my favorite. Maybe it was the island, maybe it was the military community we met, but I believe that it was the Lord’s sweet way of reassuring my heart that HE is in control, and will always look after me, no matter where in the world the military may take us.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”” background_image=”” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”20″ padding_bottom=”20″ padding_left=”” padding_right=”” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_3″ last=”no” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_3″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]

Actionable Intel

  1. Jenny shares that “ it’s in those most chaotic moments that the Lord seems to shine brightest.” Have you experienced God’s peace in the midst of chaotic situations?
  2. Jenny talks about her need to be plugged in a community of believers. How important is that for you? Do you make it a priority when you move? Do you embrace new people?
  3. I knew that I was not alone” Moving is stressful and can leave us feeling lonely. How can you, like Jenny, experience God more and know that you are never alone even when you are feeling lonely?

Directives for the Week

God Commissions Joshua

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

  1. Read through this passage and write down all the promises God made Joshua as he “PCSed” into the promised land.
  2. How many times does God repeat “be strong and courageous”? Why do you think that is? We too can be strong and courageous because God is with us. How many times do you need to remind yourself of this truth?
  3. Joshua 1:8 gives us the insight on how Joshua could be strong and courageous. What is the secret? How can you draw strength daily from His Word and His promises? What will you do today to make that a reality?
