Cultivating Worthwhile Weekly Bible Studies for Military Women & Groups
ROOTED Bible studies by Planting Roots are designed with military women in mind. They are short but not shallow, using only a Bible, a blank journal or notebook, and a desire to draw near to our God Most High. Whether doing this study at home or as part of a group, we hope you will gain spiritual strength as you encounter God.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_3″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_postslider layout=”posts” excerpt=”15″ category=”design” limit=”2″ lightbox=”yes” class=”” id=””][/fusion_postslider][fusion_text][/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”#6a6970″ background_image=”” background_parallax=”fixed” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”#e5e4e4″ border_style=”” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” padding_left=”0px” padding_right=”0px” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”left” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”fade” animation_direction=”right” animation_speed=”1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”” background_image=”” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”20″ padding_bottom=”20″ padding_left=”” padding_right=”” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_title size=”2″ content_align=”left” style_type=”default” sep_color=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” class=”” id=””]Attitude or gratitude? Pray this week: Ask God to help you recognize His responses to your prayers. Trust God that He has plans for you to prosper and not harm you. Know that you have found favor in His eyes.
Do you remember to thank God when He responds to your prayers? After He has answered your prayers? Take the time to thank God for His response. Yes even when the answer was not what you expected!
Recently, we have gone through yet another PCS, Permanent Change of Station. The military would like us to believe that 2-3 years is permanent! We have lived in beautiful Colorado Springs for two years. It went by way too fast! This was our eighth move. Together we lived in Hawaii, Georgia, Alaska, Georgia, Virginia. There were a few unaccompanied tour to Korea, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska. All this is not including little moves from apartments to houses and to my parents’ house. These are awful assignments? Not really! God showered us with blessings at each assignment. We often found the perfect house for our family and met supportive friends. From beautiful surroundings to heartwarming Bible study groups, God’s provisions were tangible.
Despite this history I am quick to throw a temper tantrum, when I feel that God does not give me the answer I am seeking. My prayers during this past PCS ranged from the big ones “Please help us find a house!” to the little bitty ones, “Could there please be a nice gymnastics class nearby for my daughters?” and “Please find a Grandma for us to briefly watch my kids since their Grandma lives so far away!” God answered them all.
He is a faithful God. Psalm 37:4 states that “when you take delight in the LORD, he will give you the desires of your heart.” He loves you and wants to bless you, though He wants you to take delight in Him. You may not receive the blessing you were hoping for, but it is still a blessing. Sometimes you may not realize He answers your prayers until much later.
I remember getting a flat tire once before a long road trip. This prevented us from getting one while on the road. A blessing in disguise. So many amazing friends would be left unmet if it was not for us moving every two years. God plans for me to prosper. Remembering this has been soothing during times of uncertainty and waiting periods. I remember the blessings.
I grow through the waiting if I have gratitude for God, not an attitude toward God.
Ruth 2:5-18
Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?” The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi. She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”
So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”
Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.” At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.” When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that “He has plans for you to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” He had plans for Ruth, a Moabite widow, to prosper, even when life looked pretty hopeless. He provided a way for her to glean from the fields of Boaz and for him to find favor with her. Ruth was grateful for the opportunity from the beginning. Ruth lost her husband and is now living far from family. On top of that she is gleaning from a stranger’s just to be able to eat.
As the story unfolds we read the blessing that Boaz poured on Ruth. “May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” She responded with gratitude with “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord.”
Ruth responded with gratitude, not an attitude.
Do you recognize the rich rewards of the Lord? Have you remembered to tell Him how you are grateful for His answers to your prayers? Even the little bitty prayers? Can you look back on answered prayers and believe that you have found favor in His eyes? You can come to take refuge under His wings.
Think about it:
- How did Boaz respond to Ruth’s love for her mother in law?
- What was Ruth’s attitude toward her circumstances?
- How did God have plans for Ruth to prosper?
Daily Reflections
Day 1: Read Ruth 1
“Where God goes, I will go.”
How did Ruth respond to Naomi when she was offered to return to her own family instead of staying with her?
Why did Naomi believe God was bitter towards her?
Would you respond the same way Ruth did to Naomi, “where you go, I will go”?
Have you ever felt like God was bitter towards you? If so, how did you or can you change your heart?
Take a prayer walk. Ask God where He wants you to go, whether it be an actual location or a different direction in your life.
Day 2: Read Ruth 2
“Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.”
What is God calling you to do now? What can you glean and gather how God has called you to persevere from your experiences? From your circumstances?
Ruth took initiative by gleaning and gathering among the sheaves. Think of something you can do to take initiative in what God is calling you to do. Journal how you can follow through with this calling.
Day 3: Read Ruth 3
“It is true that I am a redeemer.”
What does a Redeemer look like to you? Do you believe God is your Redeemer? How has He proven to be your Redeemer? We often look to other sources to redeem us, whether it be another person, a hobby, a talent, an addiction. How can you look to God instead of to those other sources to redeem you?
Meet with a mentor or a close friend you can trust and share how God has redeemed you in your life. Ask this friend how they see God redeeming you in your life.
Day 4: Read Ruth 4
“Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may His name be renowed in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age…”
Do you remember to bless the LORD for being your redeemer? How do you show Him your appreciation? How do you trust Him to be a restorer of your life and a nourisher to you?
Take some time to draw or paint a picture of how you envision God as your Redeemer, Restorer, Nourisher.
Day 5: Read Psalm 37:4
Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the LORD, he will give you the desires of your heart.”
How do you take delight in the LORD? What desires of your heart do you pray He will give you?
List the ways you can take delight in the LORD. Reflect on how God has given you desires of your heart and journal those reflections.
