Habakkuk’s dramatic opening words set the tone of this short prophetic book. In three short chapters Habakkuk laments to God and God does answer. In three short chapters God is confirmed as a God of justice and mercy. No sin will be left unpunished.
Habakkuk makes a stand, asks the tough questions, is baffled and leaves a changed man. An encounter with God changed him and it will change you. God’s ways are mysterious. I can relate to the prophet’s frustration. Many times it feels like my prayers are unanswered and help is not coming. Ultimately the prophet understands that salvation is from God and nothing else matters.
As you read through this prophetic book, you will notice the mood of the prophet changing. He is frustrated at first, then angry and perplexed but by the end of chapter 3, he is at peace.
His questions have been answered.
His lament is turned into a praise.
His spirit is lifted high.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
Habakkuk will not see the outcome of God’s promises. He is still witnessing the suffering of the people and wickedness winning. Yet he believes and trusts God with all his heart, mind and soul. Those actions increase his faith and bring him peace.
This simple equation of belief, trust and faith is what makes Habakkuk’s joy complete. He is confident that justice will prevail. God’s plans are infallible and Habakkuk’s prayer overflow with thanksgiving.

Daily Reflections
Read all of Habakkuk and reflect on Habakkuk 3:17-19
- Notice how verse 17 starts with “though” and lists painful outcomes. Verse 19 however starts with “yet” and praises flow out of the prophet’s pen. Do you have a long list of things that are currently painful in your life right now? Can you, like Habakkuk write them down and add “yet I will rejoice in the Lord.”?
- Can you trust God like the prophet? Was Habakkuk’s joy dependent on physical blessings or spiritual blessings? Ultimately what is the source of his joy (see verse 18)?
- Read verses 18 and 19 again. Write your own statement following this pattern:
