Cultivating Worthwhile Weekly Bible Studies for Military Women & Groups

ROOTED Bible studies by Planting Roots are designed with military women in mind. They are short but not shallow, using only a Bible, a blank journal or notebook, and a desire to draw near to our God Most High. Whether doing this study at home or as part of a group, we hope you will gain spiritual strength as you encounter God.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_3″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_postslider layout=”posts” excerpt=”15″ category=”design” limit=”2″ lightbox=”yes” class=”” id=””][/fusion_postslider][fusion_text]Rooted-E-e1425748167242-265x300[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”#6a6970″ background_image=”” background_parallax=”fixed” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”#e5e4e4″ border_style=”” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” padding_left=”0px” padding_right=”0px” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”left” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”fade” animation_direction=”right” animation_speed=”1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”” background_image=”” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”20″ padding_bottom=”20″ padding_left=”” padding_right=”” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_title size=”2″ content_align=”left” style_type=”default” sep_color=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” class=”” id=””]One Foot In Front Of The Other[/fusion_title][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container background_color=”” background_image=”” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_webm=”” video_mp4=”” video_ogv=”” video_preview_image=”” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_mute=”yes” video_loop=”yes” fade=”no” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”20″ padding_bottom=”20″ padding_left=”” padding_right=”” hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” menu_anchor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_text]

“That this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” Joshua 4:6-7

The sun started to peek from across the horizon. “You can do this, you got this.” My mantra for the day kept going through my head. I could see my breath but I knew that it would warm up as soon the the sun would rise. My hands were shaking but it was not from the cold. My stomach was in knot and the coffee I had earlier left a bitter taste in my mouth. “You can do this, you got this.” I felt like I was lying to myself because the tightening in my throat was lingering.

Thousands of other runners were eagerly waiting for the start of this half marathon. It appeared though that I was the only one in turmoil. Why did I ever feel a few months ago that I could run this? Wasn’t I the last one crossing the finish line of the mandatory one-mile run back in high school? And there I was, about to run 13.1 miles. Choosing running as my new hobby to commemorate turning 40 might just be the worst decision I ever made. More than likely I will be the last one crossing the finish line. Fear gripped my heart as I knew right there that I was not good enough to run this race.

“You can do this, you got this.” The mantra was still whispering to me. I remembered my training. I remembered that I had the ability to cover more than one mile. I remembered that the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other would carry me to the finish line. Through my tight throat, I whispered a prayer of thanks. Thankfulness poured out as I remembered that God was with me.  I knew He would sustain me through this race just like He did through my training.

One foot in front of the other.

I wonder if this is how the Israelites felt as they were getting ready to cross the Jordan river. 40 years they had been wandering in the desert. 40 years they prepared themselves to enter the promise land. 40 years is a long time. That morning must have felt surreal to them. They might have remembered the stories of old about the giants that inhabit this land. Fear must have run rampant in the camp.

“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” Joshua had spoken those words to them the night before. “The Lord will do wonders among you.” Those words must have felt like fresh water on a parched mouth. They must have remembered the stories of the exodus, the parting of the red sea, the water at Meriba. That morning they had gathered their manna for the day, their daily bread. That morning they watched as the Ark of the Covenant went before them into the Jordan River. The tangible reminder that God was always with them.

“So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people.” Joshua 3:14

The ark went before them and they all followed one foot in front of the other. The water receded and they all crossed the Jordan and entered the Promise land.

“When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’”

Joshua 4:1-2

God wanted the Israelites to commemorate this moment. Remember that by faith they were able to move forward. The stones were another marker in their story. Another tangible reminder of God’s presence in their lives. Joshua admonished them to remember and tell their children what those stones represented.

“God’s provision in our lives is often hard to see. There are times when we follow His commandments and we’re able to visibly see His work. Such times are profound to the believer but can be confounding to the unbeliever.” Barry, J. D.

One foot in front of the other.

That is the way I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon. My next race felt easier because I remembered that I could. I had a marker in my life that stood and dimmed my fears.

Think about it

Has fear ever crippled you and left you feeling inadequate?

How does remembering God’s presence in your life dim your fear?

What are your faith markers? What tangible ways do you record those important moments?

Daily Reflections

Day 1 Read Joshua 4:1-7

Notice how God waited until everybody passed to tell Joshua about the markers. Why do you think that is? Can you recall a time in your life, when God’s hands was revealed after the fact? Be sure to record that event and use it as your marker.

Day 2 Read Job 19:25-26

The book of Job is the perfect example of divine sovereignty. Ultimately God is in control over everything. The good things and the bad things that happen to us are under His control. Does this thought brings you peace or confusion? Job must have been very confused as to why all this misery was happening to him. In the light of this how does Job respond? How do you respond to tough times, difficult people, confusing events? God is sovereign and it is our responsibility to respond appropriately. Remember that He is always near and thank Him. Thankfulness brings you closer to God and allows His peace to fill you. Make a list today of people, situations, heartaches. Lay them at His feet with thanksgiving and allow His peace to fill you and decrease your fear.

Day 3 Read Hebrews 10:19-25

Not only is God faithful but He also made it possible for us to have fellowship with Him whenever we want. Fellowship with others is a great reminder of His presence in your life. Make a date with a friend today. Share life. Encourage one another.

Day 4 Covenant relationship with God Psalm 118:19-24

Our relationship with God is not dependent on His mood. Our relationship with Him is a covenant relationship. The thought alone should fill you with joy and make you want to dance. Enter His gate with thanksgiving today. Play some uplifting Christians music. Sing and dance like no one is watching!

Day 5 Joshua 24:1-15

At the end of his life, Joshua shared words of encouragement with the tribes of Israel. Notice how the encouragement mainly came from reminding them all the times God was with them, before them, protecting them, providing for them. “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Those words can be found on coffee mugs, door mats and pretty prints. Write those words down today. You can draw them, print them on pretty paper or a simple post it note. Place those words, where you can see them every day. Then as you read them daily remember all the times God provided for you.
