Bullied. Social outcast in a small town. Later, her boyfriend beat her for years. She was living alone, in poverty. But the thing that brought her tears? Remembering the day at 9 years old when her mother walked away from her, never to be seen again.
Abandonment.
When my husband counsels soldiers, it comes up again and again. Abandoned. It seems epidemic to this generation.
We’ve all felt it to some extent: a spouse having to deploy, getting passed over for advancement, divorce, death of a parent, a friend who just never seems to find time to call.
The Jews must have felt it. From the glories of the temple built by King Solomon with riches untold, to the humiliation of enslavement by foreigners, penniless and helpless. The mighty God of their fathers hadn’t spoken for 400 years.
Then suddenly: Jesus. And He’s speaking of God as a Father. While it is translated as Abba, or Daddy, only a few times, there’s reason to believe this was Jesus’ intent the many times He called God Father.
And when Jesus felt most alone, most abandoned, He cried out to the crawl-in-His-lap-arms-around-His-neck Abba.
Think about it:
- What do you think are the effects of abandonment in our society?
- How could lives be changed if people felt adopted, valued, wanted?
- How can we pray for, and work for, healing amongst the abandoned?

Daily Reflections
Day 1: Read Mark 14:32-42
Read and consider Jesus’ groan-deep prayer. This prayer shows us three sentences that: 1)acknowledge the Father, His power, and love for Him; 2)makes a request; and 3)submits the will to His. Practice framing all your prayers that way so you are in the habit when hard times come.
Day 2: Read Galatians 4:1-7
The worth of a slave is only in what he can do. The worth of a child, priceless. Are you still trying to prove your worth like a slave? Can you just glory today in being a loved child?
Day 3: Read Romans 8:14-17
In 1939, the stuttering British King George VI made a speech to a frightened nation. In it he said: “I said to the man at the gate of the year, ‘Give me a light that I might walk safely into the unknown’ and he said to me, ‘Go out into the darkness. Put your hand into the hand of God. It shall be to you better than the light and safer than the known.’” Not only do we not have to be a slave to sin, but we don’t have to be a slave to fear anymore. Pray the Lord will help you live this out today.
Day 4: Read Romans 8:12-17
Brennan Manning recommended spending time meditating by just breathing in saying “Abba”, breathing out saying “I belong to You.” Try it for a couple of minutes today, allowing the Holy Spirit to heal.
Day 5: Read John 10:22-39
When we’ve cuddled close to a man we love, we can come out smelling like him. Lots of us like to hold an article of clothing that smells like our deployed loved one. When you’ve spent time with your Abba, you come out smelling, sounding, thinking like Him. Try to share that essence with someone who needs a Heavenly Father today.
